One More Flag Coming
Manned spaceflight programs can cost multi-billion dollars. Yet governments often pursued them for national pride and prestige. The first human spaceflight was by the then Soviet Union in 1961. This was soon followed by the United States. It took four decades before China became the third nation to achieve this. The competitive national prestige of these endeavours was extended to even more expensive and technically demanding tasks like space walks, and moon walks. ... This painting shows American astronauts on the moon surface, one of them saluting a planted US flag. In an imaginary scenario, on top right corner of this painting, one can see another astronaut out in space. He is waving a Chinese flag hoping one day also to reach the moon and do a moon walk.
