Landmines & Cluster bombs
Landmines and cluster bombs are often distributed in war zones to deter enemy advances. They are left behind when the fighting ends. Unfortunately they remain in the ground with their destructive powers intact causing disabling maiming injuries to unsuspecting civilians especially children. The clearance of these mines and bombs is a slow painstaking and often dangerous work. But until they are cleared, the land cannot be lived in and developed again. The manufacturing and use of these mines and bombs are widely condemned. More than 150 countries have pledged to ban them according to the 1997 Ottawa Convention. However a few countries refuse to sign and rectify it, the notable ones being China, India, Russia and US.
